I'm So Sorry I Lied - the Halloween costume trend, made from your own photo

Updated Oldest check Re-check by Sources 11

Short answer

"I'm so sorry I lied" is a TikTok photo-carousel trend from October 2026: slide one shows your childhood Halloween photo with a costume that looks too good, each next slide takes one "lie" back, and the last slide shows the real photo with "I'm so sorry" [7]. To make it, line up three or four versions of one photo and post them in order in TikTok's photo mode [1]. Last checked 22 October 2026.

Each line links to the source it came from and shows when we last checked it.

What the trend is
A TikTok photo carousel of 3 to 5 slides: a childhood Halloween photo that looks too good, one "lie" taken back per slide, then the real photo with "I'm so sorry" (secondary, described by tool sellers) [7] checked
Typical slide count
Four slides is the common build (secondary: two tool sellers and a third seller's four named stages); posts range from three to five [8] checked
Timing
Reported by tool sellers as trending from about 17 October 2026, with a main wave on 19 to 21 October; a wider "I'm so sorry I lied" format is said to have run since summer. Secondary and unofficial; no end date is known [8] checked
The sound
There is no single trend sound: posts use different "original sound" entries, for example "original sound - secret" and "original sound - freya wilmot" (primary: TikTok sound pages read first-hand on 22 October 2026) [2] checked
Posting a photo carousel
TikTok's help page (primary): tap the Add post + button, tap Photo, tap Upload, select photos ("You can add up to 35 photos"), tap Next, add a filter, sound, text or stickers, then Next again for description and hashtags [1] checked
CapCut and photos
CapCut's own page (primary) says photos upload the same way as video, with a custom TikTok photo video template and a step to add music [4] checked
CapCut watermark
CapCut Help (primary): templates often include a small CapCut watermark at the end; editing manually with your own clips, music, text and effects can export without one [5] checked
Official effect?
One seller page states it is not an official TikTok effect (secondary); we found no TikTok statement either way [9] checked
Photo consent
Seller pages advise using your own childhood photo, or another person's only with their OK, and a parent or guardian deciding for anyone under 18 (secondary; general guidance, not legal advice) [8] checked
A different meme
"I lied, put your clothes back on" is a separate, older meme explained by The Daily Dot on 9 November 2024 [6] checked
CapCut price
CapCut can be downloaded for free from mobile app stores, online or on desktop (secondary tutorial); whether each effect or export option is free is not verified [11] checked

What the trend is

Many posts are swipeable photo carousels, and many others are CapCut template slideshows, which are videos; we saw both kinds on TikTok on 22 October 2026. Either way, slide one shows a childhood Halloween photo that looks "a little too good", captioned with a claim such as "When I was little I was a butterfly for Halloween". Each following slide takes one lie back with a line like "ok sorry, it wasn't pink" or "ok sorry, it was more of a DIY costume". The final slide shows the real photo, usually a homemade or badly improvised costume, with the text "I'm so sorry" [7] [8].

Why it works: the "lies" are edited versions of the same photo. The room, the pose and the child stay the same and only the costume changes, so the untouched real photo lands as the punchline [7] [8]. The adults posting it use their own childhood photos, often old flash prints from the 2000s [7].

A word on how sure we are. Every description of the trend on this page comes from secondary sources, namely pages written by sellers of image tools who watched it [7] [8] [9] [10]. TikTok has published no explainer that we could read. Where those pages disagree or give numbers we cannot check, we leave the number out. All sources were read on 22 October 2026, and this guide is a quick page for a fast trend, so it carries a short re-check deadline. More guides are on the guides hub.

The slides at a glance

Four slides is the usual build: the full lie, one lie removed, almost honest, then the real photo [8] [9]. Posts range from three to five slides [7] [8]. One seller shows a two-slide version [10]. The captions below are our own examples in the trend's style, not copied from anyone.

SlideWhat changesExample caption
1The photo made to look perfectWhen I was seven I was a fairy for Halloween
2One lie removed, for example the hair or the colourok sorry, the wings were not sparkly
3Almost honest, the costume gets cheaperok sorry, it was mostly a bedsheet
4The untouched original photoI'm so sorry

Use your own costume and your own words. The costume gap is the joke: the bigger the distance between slide one and slide four, the funnier the reveal.

How to make it, step by step

You need a phone, the photo, a way to make two or three slightly different versions of it, and TikTok. We do not provide a photo tool.

  1. Find the real photo. Your own childhood Halloween photo; the worse the costume, the better. If it is a print, photograph it flat in daylight from straight above [7] [8].
  2. Pick the lie. Decide what you will claim to have been, something generic such as a fairy, a black cat or a superhero [7] [8].
  3. Make the lie versions. Make two or three versions of the same photo, ordered from the biggest lie to the smallest. Change one thing at a time, for example hair, then outfit quality, then accessories. Keep the same face, pose, background and crop on every slide [9]. You can use any ordinary photo editor, an AI image editor, or real extra pictures of the same outfit; the tool is your choice.
  4. Finish with the original. The last slide is the original photo exactly as it is, without retouching [9] [7].
  5. Write the captions. Slide one claims the costume, each next slide takes one thing back, the last says "I'm so sorry" [8] [7].
  6. Post in photo mode. In TikTok tap the Add post + button, tap Photo, tap Upload and select your slides in order. You can add up to 35 photos. Tap Next, add sound and text, tap Next again for the description, hashtags and cover, then post [1].
  7. Time the reveal. Let slide one sit for a moment, then one swipe per apology, with the real photo last [8] [10].

You can also use the same 9:16 pictures in another app's carousel or video, picking audio in that app [10].

The sound

There is no single trend sound to hunt for. Posts use different "original sound" entries. Two first-hand examples, read on TikTok as a guest on 22 October 2026: original sound - secret [2] and original sound - freya wilmot [3]. Both are primary TikTok pages. We do not name either as the trend sound, because other posts use others.

To pick one, open any trend post you like, tap the sound name at the bottom of the post and tap Use sound [10]. You can also add a sound while posting, which TikTok's own steps list as an option in the photo editor [1]. We have not checked the sound's ownership or licence, so we say nothing on that.

CapCut or TikTok photo mode?

For the carousel you do not need CapCut. Many trend posts are photo carousels, so you only need the image files, and TikTok's photo mode accepts several photos, a sound and text [10] [1]. Many other posts are CapCut template slideshows, which are videos; we saw both kinds on TikTok on 22 October 2026.

Use CapCut if you want a video slideshow instead of a carousel. CapCut's own page says photos are uploaded the same way as video clips, and it offers a step to add music [4]. Build the project by hand: CapCut says templates often add a small watermark at the end, while a manual edit with your own clips, music, text and effects can be exported without one [5].

Because many posts are template slideshows, you may want a template. We did not verify any specific CapCut template for this trend, so we name none and link none.

CapCut can be downloaded for free from mobile app stores, online or on desktop [11]. We have not verified which individual effects or export options cost money.

Choosing and preparing the photo

  • Head to toe. A standing, one-person photo works best [7] [8] [9].
  • Old and imperfect. Flash snapshots and scanned prints with a homemade or very cheap costume give the biggest gap [7] [8].
  • Prints. Lay the print flat in daylight and shoot from straight above [8] [7].
  • Consistency. Keep the face, age, pose, background, light and crop the same on every slide, and reject any version where the face or the furniture drifted [9].
  • The last slide. Do not retouch, restore or recolour the original [9].

Common mistakes

  • Changing the face. If the face or pose drifts between slides, the joke breaks; the lie should change only the costume [9].
  • Hiding the costume. Text laid over the costume spoils the reveal; keep captions short [8].
  • Retouching the last photo. The punchline is the untouched original [9].
  • Wrong order. The biggest lie goes first and the real photo last [7] [8].

Ideas and variants

A pet version exists: the first slide introduces a dog as a grand-sounding name and a few slides later the real dog appears [7]. A friend or twin version appeared earlier on the same format [8]. Seller pages also mention Spanish-language versions of the wider format [7]. Costumes named across the sources include a princess, butterfly, witch, black cat, superhero, Hello Kitty, ballerina and zombie [7] [8] [9].

This trend is not the same as "I lied, put your clothes back on", an older and different TikTok meme explained by The Daily Dot in 2024 [6]. It is also a different thing from any official TikTok effect.

Notes and sources

Trefoil Guides is not affiliated with TikTok, ByteDance or CapCut, nor with the creator of the trend or of any sound. We use no logos from either app.

The TikTok and CapCut pages are the official (primary) sources. The TikTok help page and the two TikTok sound pages were read first-hand on 22 October 2026 (marked V); the CapCut pages were read as extracts of the official page text, because they need JavaScript, so re-open them before relying on exact wording. The four pages from image-tool sellers and the tutorial are secondary sources. They are competitors' pages, listed as research sources only, and we do not recommend or rank them. We did not try any of those tools, and we did not test the trend on TikTok ourselves.

What we could not verify and therefore left out: official view or post counts, who started the trend, the sound licence, a single trend sound, an end date, and any specific CapCut template for it.

FAQ

What is the "I'm so sorry I lied" trend?

A TikTok photo carousel where the first slide is a childhood Halloween photo that looks better than it was, each next slide takes one "lie" back, and the last slide shows the real photo with the text "I'm so sorry" [7] [8].

When did it start and when does it end?

Tool sites report it trending since about 17 October 2026, with the main wave on 19 to 21 October, and describe a wider "I'm so sorry I lied" format that has run since summer [8] [7]. Nobody can say when it ends.

How many slides do I need?

Most examples use four: the full lie, one lie removed, almost honest, then the real photo. Posts range from three to five slides [8] [7] [9].

What do I write on each slide?

Slide one claims the costume, the next slides say "ok sorry" and take one thing back each time, and the last says "I'm so sorry". Use your own words and your own costume [8] [7].

What is the sound?

There is no single trend sound. Posts use different original sounds, for example "original sound - secret" and "original sound - freya wilmot" [2] [3]. Open a trend post you like, tap the sound name at the bottom and choose Use sound [10].

How do I post it on TikTok?

Tap +, choose Photo, tap Upload, pick your slides in order (you can add up to 35 photos), tap Next, add sound and text, then tap Next again for the description and hashtags and post [1].

Do I need CapCut?

No. The carousel works in TikTok's photo mode. Many posts are CapCut template slideshows (videos), so use CapCut only if you want that video, and build the project by hand rather than from a template to avoid CapCut's template watermark [1] [4] [5] [10].

Is it free?

The trend needs a photo, a phone and the TikTok app, and CapCut can be downloaded for free. Tools that make the lie versions exist, but they run on their own limits or paid plans, so check each tool's own page [11] [7] [8].

Can I use AI to make the lie slides?

Many people do, and you can also use any ordinary photo editor. Keep the face, pose and background the same and leave the final photo untouched [9] [8].

Is this the same as "I lied, put your clothes back on"?

No. That is a different, older TikTok meme from 2024, explained by The Daily Dot [6].

Can I use a photo of a child?

Use your own childhood photo, or someone else's only with their OK; for anyone under 18 a parent or guardian should decide. This is general guidance, not legal advice [8] [7].

Is it an official TikTok effect?

No source describes it as one. It is a user-made format, posted as photo carousels and as CapCut template slideshows [9]. This guide is not affiliated with TikTok or CapCut.

What photo works best?

A head-to-toe, one-person, old flash or printed snapshot of a homemade or very cheap costume. Photograph prints flat in daylight from straight above [7] [8].

Does it work with pets?

Yes, a pet version exists, where a dog is introduced with a grand name and the real dog shows up a few slides later [7].
