PS5 games running on Xbox hardware: what PS5X can and cannot do
Short answer
Yes, a handful of PlayStation 5 games have been shown running on an Xbox Series X, but only through PS5X, an experimental Xbox port of the open-source KytyPS5 emulator, and only in Xbox Developer Mode, where Microsoft caps a game at 5 GB of memory [1] [2]. It does not turn an Xbox into a PS5, it does not run PlayStation Store purchases, and the demonstrated games are ones that also exist on other platforms, not PS5 exclusives [1].

- What PS5X is
- An Xbox Series X|S port of the open-source KytyPS5 emulator by developer Devran Cosmo Uenal, first shown in a video published 8 September 2026
- Games shown running
- The PS5 versions of GEX Trilogy, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, Marvel Cosmic Invasion and Quake II, all with Xbox controller input; all four are also sold on other platforms
- Performance seen
- Quake II at roughly 25 to 45 frames per second in the developer's footage, an estimate from video and not a benchmark
- Where it runs
- Only in Xbox Developer Mode; Microsoft documents a 5 GB foreground memory limit for games there (1 GB for apps), and the limit does not apply under the Visual Studio debugger
- Graphics API gap
- KytyPS5 on PC targets Vulkan 1.3; Xbox Series X|S games can use DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, so the Xbox port needed its own Direct3D 12 renderer
- Emulator status and rules
- KytyPS5 is free, open source (GPL-2.0), not affiliated with Sony, distributes no games or system software, and tells users to use only legally obtained game files
- Public build
- ThePCEnthusiast reports an Xbox build, version 1.1.26291.1739 released 18 October 2026, available through the project's GitHub releases; Engadget's earlier article said no public download existed yet
What is actually running on Xbox
The headline "PS5 games running on Xbox hardware" is true in a narrow sense. Developer Devran Cosmo Uenal published a video on 8 September 2026 showing the PS5 version of Quake II booting on an Xbox Series X and being played with an Xbox controller. The software doing the work is PS5X, his Xbox port of KytyPS5, an open-source PlayStation 5 translation layer that started life on PC [1].
Three more games were shown alongside Quake II: GEX Trilogy, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd and Marvel Cosmic Invasion. All four accept Xbox controller input and some have working sound [1]. Later reporting adds footage of Astro's Playroom starting on the console [4]. Nobody has shown a PS5 exclusive running to a playable state on Xbox, and the few games shown also exist on other platforms [1].
Do not read "boots" as "plays well". The Quake II footage averaged roughly 25 to 45 frames per second with occasional drops below 20 and visible controller lag, and those figures are estimates read from a video, not a standard benchmark [4]. Reliable compatibility across whole games is a separate and much harder claim than launching a title.
Why this is possible at all
Sony and Microsoft built their current consoles around closely related AMD hardware. Engadget's summary is that both have eight Zen 2 CPU cores, RDNA 2 graphics and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, and that PS5 games are compiled for the same x86-64 architecture PCs use [1]. That means KytyPS5 can run a game's CPU code directly on the host processor rather than imitating a different chip, and spend its effort translating system calls and graphics commands instead.
The graphics side is where the Xbox port had to do real work. KytyPS5 on PC recompiles the PS5's shaders for Vulkan and needs a Vulkan 1.3 graphics card [3]. Microsoft's documentation lists DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 as the graphics APIs available to games on Xbox Series X|S [2], so PS5X needed a Direct3D 12 renderer of its own [4]. A consequence is that graphics fixes made by the PC project do not arrive on Xbox for free: they have to be adapted first [1].
That is also why a game that works in KytyPS5 on PC is not guaranteed to work on Xbox. Unsupported graphics operations and differences between the two renderers can stop a title from starting [4].
Developer Mode and the 5 GB ceiling
PS5X cannot run on an ordinary retail Xbox. It is packaged as a Universal Windows Platform app and runs in Xbox Developer Mode, which is Microsoft's official route for running your own software on a console [4]. A console in Developer Mode cannot load retail games until it is switched back, according to Engadget [1].
The decisive limit is memory. Microsoft's documentation gives UWP games a 5 GB foreground memory allowance and apps 1 GB, and says that exceeding it causes memory allocation failures [2]. The same page notes the limit does not apply when software runs from the Visual Studio debugger [2]. Engadget compares this with the 13.5 GB of the console's 16 GB that a retail game gets, so PS5X works with a bit over a third of the memory a normal Xbox game can use, which rules out most large current-generation releases [1].
The project works around part of this with memory paging, swap-file support and texture-quality options, and the 18 October build reportedly turns on GPU memory-saving features by default [4]. Those help a game fit; they do not guarantee that it runs.
Our reading, not a measured result: this memory ceiling, more than raw hardware similarity, is why the list of working games will probably stay short unless Microsoft changes the Developer Mode limit.
Legal basics and scam warnings
KytyPS5's own README says the project is not affiliated with Sony Interactive Entertainment, does not distribute games or copyrighted system software, and that users should use only game files they obtained legally [3]. The Xbox port's developer says it contains no PS5 firmware or decryption keys [1]. We have not verified that claim and we do not link to builds or tell you how to obtain game files.
Emulation is not a risk-free hobby. Engadget points out that Microsoft banned emulators in the retail Xbox store in 2023 and that players who want emulators have since had to rely on Developer Mode [1]. It also warns that scammers are releasing malware under look-alike names such as "PCS5X" to catch people searching for these projects [1]. If you look for the project, use the developer's own GitHub releases and nothing else.
PS5X also does not give you access to PlayStation Store purchases or turn the console into a drop-in PS5 replacement [4]. If your goal is to play a specific PS5 game, the supported way is a PS5, or the Xbox or PC version where the publisher released one.
How to read the next headline
New demos will keep appearing, so a few questions sort real progress from noise.
- Which hardware and mode? Developer Mode on a Series X or S is a different claim from a modded retail console.
- Which PS5 game, and is it also on Xbox? A game that already exists on Xbox proves less than a true exclusive.
- Playable or booting? Menus and a few frames are not a playthrough.
- Which emulator? The same outlet that covered PS5X noted footage of God of War III Remastered, a PS4 game, on Xbox and said the software behind that demonstration had not been independently established [4].
We have not installed or tested PS5X. Everything above comes from the sources listed, and every claim about speed, compatibility and availability can change within days.
FAQ
Can an Xbox Series X play PS5 games?
Only a few, and only through the experimental PS5X emulator in Developer Mode. Games shown so far include Quake II, GEX Trilogy, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd and Marvel Cosmic Invasion, all of which also exist on other platforms [1].
Do PS5 games run on Xbox Series S as well?
The developer's port targets Xbox Series X|S through Developer Mode and not the Xbox One [4]. The demonstrated results were shown on a Series X [1].
Why does PS5X need Developer Mode?
Emulators are blocked from the retail Xbox store, so the port runs as a UWP app in Developer Mode [1] [4]. That mode also limits games to 5 GB of memory [2].
Is PS5X legal?
The KytyPS5 project says it is not affiliated with Sony, ships no games or system software and expects users to use only legally obtained game files [3]. This page is not legal advice, and we do not link to builds or game files.
Can PS5X run PS5 exclusives like Astro Bot or God of War Ragnarok?
Astro's Playroom has been shown starting on Xbox hardware [4], but no playable run of a PS5 exclusive has been shown in the sources we read [1]. Treat any claim beyond that as unverified.
How fast does a PS5 game run on Xbox with PS5X?
Quake II was seen at about 25 to 45 frames per second with occasional dips under 20 in the developer's footage, which is an estimate from video and not a benchmark [4].
