Free Valheim-style RPG games: what is actually free, and what is not

Is Valheim free?

No. The Steam store lists Valheim at $29.99 in the US store on 21 October 2026 and shows no demo [1]. Steam describes it as a collaborative exploration and survival game for one to ten players in a procedurally generated world inspired by Norse mythology, where you craft weapons, build halls and defeat bosses called the Forsaken [1]. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux [1].

Beware pages promising the game for nothing. We do not link to unofficial copies, and neither does this site; if a page offers Valheim outside Steam or another licensed store, assume it is unsafe. The honest ways to pay less are a Steam sale or waiting for a discount, and neither is guaranteed.

Free options that exist on Steam

"Valheim-style" can mean three things: co-op survival with base building, a fantasy RPG progression, or a boss-gated world. Nothing free that we checked matches all three. These are the free routes that Steam's own pages confirm.

Once Human

Once Human is listed as free to play. Steam calls it a "Strange Worlds Survival Game" set in a post-apocalyptic future where you team up with friends, fight monstrous enemies, compete for resources and build your own territory [2]. It was released on 9 July 2024 by Starry Studio and runs on Windows [2]. It shares the survival-and-base-building loop with Valheim. It does not share the Norse fantasy setting, and its Steam page lists massively multiplayer and PvP features that Valheim's does not [2] [1]. Treat it as a different game in the same broad genre.

Pax Dei 7-Day Trial

Steam hosts a free trial application for Pax Dei, whose full game Steam describes as a social sandbox MMO inspired by medieval legends, where you explore, build a home and trade with other players [4]. The trial's name says 7 days; the full game is a paid purchase [4] [3]. We read the store listing only and did not verify what the trial includes beyond its name.

Why nothing else is on this list

We only list games whose Steam page confirms they are free or have a free trial, and we did not play any of them. Lists elsewhere that rank free "Valheim killers" often rely on opinion, and we do not repeat unverified rankings.

If you will pay: the closest paid look-alikes

If the real goal is the Valheim experience, two recent Steam releases describe the same format. Both are paid, and both prices below were checked on 21 October 2026 and can change at any time.

• Enshrouded is a solo and co-op survival action RPG in which you fight the Shroud and build in a fully terraformable land. It reached version 1.0 on 15 October 2026 and cost $35.99 with a launch discount against a $39.99 list price [5]. Our own Enshrouded 1.0 build guide covers what changed in 1.0.
• RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a co-operative survival adventure in which you gather, build, skill and craft. It was released on 15 September 2026 and was $20.99 against a $29.99 list price at the time of our check [6].

Steam lists both with single-player, multiplayer, co-op and online co-op support, the same categories as Valheim [5] [6] [1]. We have not compared depth, combat or building, and we do not claim either is the best Valheim alternative.

How to pick without wasting money

A short checklist, based on what Steam pages let you verify before paying.

1. Check the free label. On Steam, free games say Free to Play; trials say so in the name [2] [3]. A game that only offers a free weekend or a demo can disappear from the free list.
2. Match the players. Valheim supports one to ten players [1]. If you play with one friend, co-op support on the Steam page matters more than genre tags.
3. Check the platform. Once Human is listed for Windows only, while Valheim lists Windows, Mac and Linux [2] [1].
4. Use Steam's refund rules for paid games and read the current policy on Steam's site before relying on it, since terms can change.
5. Re-check prices. The prices here are dated; Steam sells at a discount often, and a paid option may beat a free one that does not fit what you want.
